Tell President Bush to Protect Americans' Property Rights!

In recent years, money-hungry state and local government officials have joined with developers and big businesses in an unholy alliance to destroy private property rights. Their method is simple: government officials still desire more money to spend on new programs, political allies, and themselves, even though taxpayers have become better organized and less willing to part with their hard-earned money in recent years. So instead, they offer incentives to major retailers and other businesses that they believe will generate tax revenue and, rather than businesses purchasing land on the open market, governments frequently use their eminent domain powers to simply take the land.

Subject: Support Americans' Property Rights!

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I urge you to support private property rights and promote your vision of an "ownership society" by staying out of the Kelo v. City of New London case that will soon be deliberated before the United States Supreme Court. For too long, state and local governments have been using their eminent domain powers as a revenue-raising tool. First, they push homeowners and small businesses out using eminent domain and then they frequently offer generous taxpayer-backed incentives to bring "economic development" to the area. This process is not what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they wrote the U.S. Constitution, and it undermines our American tradition of economic freedom. Although I would urge you to consider filing a brief on behalf of property owners, simply staying out of this case and not filing a brief at all will give property owners and taxpayers a fighting chance to win needed protection.

Sincerely,
